The Power of Nonprofit Advocacy: Yes We Can and Why We Must
Wednesday, July 23, 2025; 10am-11:30am
Nonprofit organizations are central to our communities. Whether we're providing access to critical services, protecting our environment, supporting artists, or organizing our neighborhood, we address the needs and reflect the passions and priorities of our communities. Nonprofits are also the most trusted sector and are often looked to for information, connections to resources, and to speak out on important issues. So, why are we so often left out of policy decisions? Some of it is simply mis-education ("nonprofits can't be political") while some is intentional exclusion or an assumption that nonprofits are only there to clean up after the mess has been made. But what if we were at the policy table, sought out for our expertise and deferred to when crafting policies and budgets? In this session, we'll look at why and how nonprofits can (and must) make advocacy a central strategy in all of our work.

Prior to CalNonprofits, Geoff served as CEO of California’s largest community college foundation, was a leader in the College Promise movement, and helped secure a record $100M gift to two dozen community colleges. Before that he served as Executive Director of an activist-led social justice fund. His previous work includes public affairs radio programming, campaign field organizing, and as a nonprofit trainer / facilitator.
