Rewiring Change: The Neuroscience of Leading Through Transformation

Wednesday, December 9, 2026
9am - 12:00pm; In Person

Change isn't just something nonprofits implement. It's something people have to process.

Nonprofit organizations are constantly navigating change—funding shifts, evolving community needs, staffing challenges, new technology, policy changes, partnerships, and growing demands with limited resources. Even when change is necessary, people may experience uncertainty, fatigue, resistance, or disengagement.

Rewiring Change helps nonprofit leaders understand the human side of transformation and develop practical strategies for moving people from uncertainty to action.

Using Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model + neuroscience + real-world nonprofit application, participants explore how leaders can create urgency without panic, build trust, communicate purpose, remove barriers, and sustain momentum—while keeping the organization's mission at the center.

Key Learnings

Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand the brain during change — Recognize how uncertainty, stress, workload, and ambiguity influence employee engagement and decision-making.
  • Create urgency without creating burnout — Communicate the why, now, and impact while protecting the people responsible for delivering the mission.
  • Build a coalition for change — Identify champions, influencers, subject-matter experts, skeptics, and key stakeholders across the organization.
  • Connect change to mission — Help employees understand how organizational changes affect the people and communities they serve.
  • Turn strategy into everyday behavior — Translate broad initiatives into clear expectations: What does this change mean for my team and my work?
  • Engage people instead of simply informing them — Use listening, questions, transparency, and psychological safety to surface concerns and build ownership.
  • Identify what's getting in the way — Diagnose barriers involving people, processes, technology, resources, leadership, or competing priorities.
  • Create short-term wins — Establish meaningful 30-day indicators of progress that demonstrate momentum and reinforce purpose.
  • Lead through change fatigue — Recognize when teams are overloaded and use reinforcement, prioritization, and feedback to sustain capacity.
  • Anchor change into the organization — Align leadership behaviors, systems, meetings, recognition, accountability, onboarding, and culture so change becomes sustainable.

Trainer: Dr. Maya Austin, Management Cues

Dr. Mayra Austin is a management scientist, operator and the visionary behind Management Cues—a neuroscience-backed training methodology redefining how managers perform, think, learn and lead in real environments. As CEO & Founder of Management Cues, Dr. Austin has built a first-of-its-kind approach to management training that moves beyond theory and into measurable impact. Her work is grounded in the belief that management is not intuitive—it is a skillset that must be trained, practiced, and neurologically reinforced. Through her methodology, organizations have achieved up to a 295% increase in engagement, a 235% boost in managerial performance, and a 243% reduction in cognitive stress—proving that when managers change, systems change. With decades of experience as an operations leader, Dr. Austin has led across complex\environments where execution, equity, and performance intersect. She identified a critical gap in the workforce: an overemphasis on leadership development without the infrastructure to build tactical management mastery. Management Cues was created to close that gap—equipping managers with real-time tools, cognitive awareness, and structured decision-making frameworks that translate directly into outcomes.
