Succession Planning & Transition Success: How To Get It Done Right
In today’s nonprofit landscape, leadership transitions are not just inevitable—they’re increasingly frequent due to burnout, shifting funding realities, and generational changes in leadership. These moments can be disruptive, but they can also spark renewal, innovation, and deeper alignment with mission and values. This workshop equips nonprofit leaders and boards with practical tools to strengthen organizational resilience and continuity through succession and transition planning. Participants will learn how to prepare for both planned and unplanned transitions, engage staff and board in meaningful planning, and approach leadership change as a strategic opportunity rather than a crisis.
You’ll leave with a roadmap of steps to begin or refresh your succession plan, strategies for managing internal and external communications, and tools to support organizational health during transitions. We’ll also explore issues shaping the field today—such as equity in leadership pipelines, the role of interim leaders, and addressing founder or long-term leader transitions with care.
Workshop Highlights:
Trends, challenges, and opportunities — leadership transition wave, evolving leadership needs, reality of funding pressures, and exploring strategic opportunities that emerge.
Leveraging Strategic Opportunities
Leadership change can illuminate or attract strategic opportunities, such as staff restructure, board development, coalition-building, partnerships, and/or mergers and acquisitions.
Succession Planning Roadmap
Phases and timelines for emergency, planned, and pipeline-focused succession planning, including a step-by-step worksheet.
Leadership, Legacy & Communication
Honoring outgoing leaders and the organization, especially founders or long-tenure executives, while celebrating accomplishments, sustaining culture, and engaging staff, board, funders, and partners with transparency and confidence.
Action Planning Workshop
Guided reflection and planning time to clarify next steps, strengthen readiness, and draft a practical transition checklist.
